LEETON SHIRE COUNCIL NOTICEBOARD COUNCIL NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR September 2025 It gives me great pleasure to share with you some exciting developments and celebrations that have taken place across our wonderful Shire. This year marks a remarkable milestone - 100 years of commercial rice growing in the Riverina - and it was fitting that Leeton hosted the national conference. SunRice, a company that has long supported our local economy and employed so many in our community, continues to play a central role in our prosperity. I was especially proud to see the Roxy Community Theatre host the prestigious 2025 Rice Industry Awards, showcasing our town's beautiful facilities. I am also delighted to announce that the Roxy Community Theatre has secured $2,000,040 in grant funding from the Australian and NSW Governments. This funding will allow the full vision of the Roxy Masterplan to be realised, restoring elements that were originally value- managed out and enabling the establishment of the Roxy Institute of Performing Arts (RIPA). This is a significant investment in our cultural life and our future generations. Pleasingly, Council has not been required to vote further funds to the project, reducing our share of the full Roxy redevelopment costs now to around 30%. Another highlight has been the completion of the Yanco and Whitton Community Development Action Plans. These plans provide a springboard for growth for these villages and will help ensure that our smaller communities thrive into the future. I extend heartfelt thanks to the dedicated committees and community members of Yanco and Whitton, as well as to Peter Kenyon and Rural Aid, for supporting and facilitating this important work. On the financial front, Professor Joseph Drew has delivered the eagerly awaited report on Council's Financial Sustainability. This report is critical for shaping the future of our Shire, and Council will now establish a committee to examine his findings and recommendations. We are seeking five committed community members to join this important committee, which will meet fortnightly. While this requires real dedication, it is a valuable opportunity to help steer Leeton's financial sustainability journey. For more information and to submit an EOI please visit haveyoursay.leeton.nsw.gov.au. In addition, Council has recently adopted its new Council Committee Information and Terms of Reference Book. Council relies on committees to both inform decision-making and ensure strong community engagement. We often hear the call for greater community involvement, and this is a practical way to be part of shaping our Shire. I warmly invite members of the public to nominate themselves for these four-year terms. Please keep an eye out for our socials and website in the coming weeks to learn more. The Leeton Eisteddfod wrapped up on 31 August with a spectacular concert. It was inspiring to see so many in our community share their artistic talents, and wonderful to witness the Roxy once again being filled with life and energy. Events like these not only enrich our culture but also contribute to our local economy. My sincere thanks to the Eisteddfod Committee and the Roxy staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the event a success. Congratulations also to the Roxy Dream Team (of volunteers) for being selected as finalists for the upcoming 2025 NSW Riverina Murray Business Awards. Finally, I am pleased to report that the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) continues to reflect a positive view of Council operations and are generous about sharing ideas for enhancing our existing operations. This is testament to the dedication of our staff and provides reassurance that Leeton Shire Council continues to be well run and is compliant when it comes to regulations and reporting.
