This new infrastructure will significantly enhance freight and passenger rail efficiency across the Western Riverina. The multi-user rail siding, located on the Griffith end of Leeton Shire, is on the Junee to Griffith rail line. Its development will enable freight trains up to 1.5 kilometres in length to load, park, or pass others without blocking the main line. Construction company Laing O'Rourke has been engaged to deliver the works, with construction commencing from late July and expected to continue through to November 2025, weather permitting. The scope includes installing track infrastructure, including ballast, sleepers and new track. Leeton Shire Council is delighted to announce the commencement of works on Stage 2 of the Roxy Community Theatre Redevelopment Masterplan, following receipt in July of the funding agreement for the Australian Government's Growing Regions Funding. Stage 2 will deliver a multi-purpose theatrette, a fully equipped function kitchen, a gaming/ digital development space and management office, and improved educational capability in the Supper Room. These facilities will increase the venue's capacity, functionality, versatility and revenue raising potential. The new theatrette will be equipped with retractable seating, enabling the space to be adapted for a variety of purposes, such as movie screenings, acting workshops, comedy performances, and other community events. The total project value is estimated at $1.6 million. The Australian Government will contribute 50% of the total cost through Round 2 of the Growing Regions Program, with Council funding the remaining amount as approved last financial year. Stage 2 is scheduled for completion by December 2025, with the retractable seating due for delivery in March 2026. Council is excited to join in on the Local Government Week 2025 celebrations, running from Monday 4 August to Sunday 10 August, with the aim to move the conversation beyond roads, rates and rubbish, to the important and far-reaching role councils play as the hubs of their community. One of the key events during the week is a special Local Government themed Storytime Session at the Leeton Shire Library on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, from 10.30am to 12pm. This family-friendly event will include stories read by Deputy Mayor Cr Michael Kidd and one of Council's outdoor staff. Kids and parents/carers will then have the unique opportunity to explore some of Council's machinery, which will be situated in the carpark behind the library. To further celebrate Local Government Week, Council will run a social media campaign highlighting interesting facts and statistics about Council, achievements, key services, and upcoming programming at the Roxy Community Theatre. Leeton Shire Council invites the community to participate in the Local Government Week activities and learn more about the crucial role Council plays in everyday life. Council wishes to advise that there will be interruptions to the water supply along the following roads.
