Sign up Leeton Shire Council and local school bus operators are reminding all road users to "Be Bus Aware" as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety around buses. This message especially important during school zones times, in and around schools and around the many informal school zone bus stops in the Shire. Buses are heavy vehicles that require more distance to stop than lighter vehicles, so maintaining a safe following distance is crucial. Parents can also play a critical role in bus safety by communicating with their children the safest route home from the bus stop, ensure they are using the seatbelts on the bus and remind students to not move until the bus has left the bus stop. In rural and regional areas there are many informal school bus stops that don't have signs or structures, such as bus shelters. They're often temporary and located at the end of a driveway or residence. Slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash and look out for children crossing the road. A stationary bus can block the view of children, so drivers need to slow down, and be prepared to stop, even on rural and semi-rural roads.
