PUBLIC EDUCATION WEEK 2025 IGNITE YOUR POTENTIAL LEETON HIGH SCHOOL LEETON HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION WEEK 2025 Education Week is an annual celebration of NSW public education and the achievements of our schools and students. This year's theme 'Ignite your potential' celebrates 177 years of public education in NSW and acknowledges the quality education public schools provide and the opportunities available to everyone attending Leeton High School. Leeton High School will celebrate Education Week with a whole school assembly acknowledging our students, staff and the diversity of opportunity and experiences on offer at our school to ignite the potential within. Students and staff will celebrate with a variety of activities and competitions and a prize draw for our students demonstrating our expected behaviours of being a respectful, responsible learner. LHS EXPO AND YEAR 7 2026 MEET AND GREET Our school community was invited to our annual LHS Expo where the expansive opportunities and top-notch facilities on offer at Leeton High School were on show. Our Expo commenced with a Smoking Ceremony led by Elijah Ingram, to give thanks to mother earth for the gift of life and to promote a calmness to help us all manage when challenges arise. After the Smoking Ceremony, students and families explored and participated in activities set up by each faculty and enjoyed the musical performances by out talented singers and musicians. It was a unique learning experience for all involved and a wonderful opportunity to share the facilities and opportunities available at our school. Year 7 2026 parent, carers and students were invited for a tour of the school and to meet our staff and other members of our school community. It was wonderful to meet so many people, and we look forward to our newest students and their families joining us next year. STUDENT LEADERSHIP Our Student Representative Council and Leadership Team continue to work together to drive improvement across our school and to raise funds to support worthy causes helping those in need. We are very proud of our proactive student leaders who have really embraced their roles and who have contributed to making things better for others. Leeton High School students are participating, alongside other students from local high schools, in the Leeton Shire Youth Councillors program. Our young Shire Councillors Anna Woodlands and Ruby Miller meet throughout the year with our local councillors to discuss topical issues impacting the young people of Leeton and surrounds. It is very reassuring that we have such a strong and driven group of young people well versed with local and global issues striving to making a difference together for the youth of Leeton. Last term, our School Captain Amin Azizul and Vice- Captain Iskandar Mohd Azry travelled to Sydney to participate in the Parliament of NSW School Leadership Program to learn more about the parliamentary system and to meet student leaders from across the state. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were able to bring back a greater understanding of their roles as leaders to benefit our school. Thank you to the students and staff who participated in our local ANZAC Day services to commemorate this important occasion and the incredible sacrifices made by past and present service men and women and their families to protect our rights and freedoms. Thank you also to our students who participated in ceremonies across the community as part of the Leeton Cadets Unit. ANZAC Day was also commemorated with a whole school assembly. Students have long been involved in community service events including sharing their knowledge and cultural understanding with the lovely residents of Assumption Villa during Reconciliation Week and catering for the much-loved Christmas in July functions at St. Peters, serving those in attendance and receiving very positive feedback for their efforts. LEETON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Our Year 7/8 Da Vinci Decathlon team had an outstanding day in Wagga in Term 2. Leeton High School competed against 10 teams to achieve Third Place in Mathematics. Congratulations to the team on their amazing results against very strong competition from across the Riverina. Our Year 9/10 Da Vinci Decathlon team also competed in the Riverina final in Wagga earning an overall 2nd place. Our team designed an innovative nesting box, created poetry and art about the metaverse, performed a skit where they were technology of theatre and demonstrated their knowledge of maps, vaccines, Da Vinci innovations and much more with a 1st place in code breaking, 2nd place in Mathematics, Science, Art and Poetry and 3rd place in Engineering. Well done to both teams for their unique approach to challenging activities. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) remains a strong focus at Leeton High School and provides our STEM minded students and teachers with great opportunities, resources, and technology to explore this dynamic growth area. Our school has been fortunate to be included as members of the NSW Virtual STEM Academy and our students and staff continue to work with Murrumbidgee Regional High School as part of this awesome program. Our Year 9 and 10 STEM Team have also been awarded the title Champion School after competing against several schools in the Science and Engineering Challenge Day in Griffith, hosted by the University of Newcastle and Murrumbidgee Regional High School, last term after successfully building bridges, wind turbines, planes, fish traps and ecohabitats where they excelled as a team. For students wanting to expand their learning horizons in a more career focussed pathway we provide the most current information and opportunities by hosting trade specific workshops and work ready initiatives such as the very successful WIN, YES and work experience programs, including White Card training, for those students wishing to best prepare themselves for the work force. We facilitate many avenues for our students wanting to learn through 'on the job' training via our links with the generous businesses of Leeton and other local industry in the area and many students have been successful in gaining apprenticeships or traineeships through these programs. Leeton High School also hosted the annual Western Riverina Careers Expo in June which attracts over 800 students and 60 exhibitors from across NSW. This innovative initiative has been an impressive reflection of what our school has to offer students in preparation for future learning after school and is the premier school-based event of its kind in our region. To ensure our students make the right choices for their future, the Academic Mentor Program helps Year 10 students to prepare for senior school and to make the right choices to meet their aspirations. This program also provides information to parents and opportunities to ask our Year 10 mentors and subject experts any questions they may have before making final subject selections later this term. Another effective initiative at Leeton High School is our Hands on Learning program which is going from strength to strength. This unique initiative provides students with the opportunity to shine outside of the classroom working on different projects and learning different skills with our skilled teacher and artisans. Hands on Learning is also an important link with our community, and we have certainly enjoyed working with and learning from other schools in our town. Students continued to work with our local primary schools supporting their events through time keeping, umpiring and refereeing and sharing subject specific knowledge and skills with our younger friends. Our PASS classes have had great success in sharing their sporting knowledge with our primary school friends over the last few years. LEETON HIGH SCHO LHS QUI NON PROFICIT, DEFICIT We also continued our Yindyamarra Girls' Group with the assistance of Jenna Weymouth our Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer to promote belonging, trust and resilience. We look forward to seeing our girls learn, share, and grow through their involvement in this program. Our students have also engaged with the Yidaki Didgeridoo Program facilitated by Damian Thorne our local Aboriginal Liaison Officer and Uncle Mick Lyons from Sandhills providing an outstanding and informative opportunity to learn about Wiradjuri history and culture. The Community Op Shop has also been strong source of support by hosting our students to assist with learning new skills and working with different people. Our students have been able to work in the customer service area and have also learnt to cook and prepare delicious meals. Our partnership with the team from Boys to the Bush sees the delivery of term programs packed with a variety of learning opportunities and activities. The program focussed on developing social skills, resilience and perseverance, confidence building and engaging positively in every environment. We look forward to our Term 3 program, commencing this week, and thank the Boys to the Bush staff and or community for hosting our students for various sessions. Our Wellbeing Day provided a unique opportunity for a BBQ cooked by the amazingly generous Rapid Relief Team and an inspiring dance by our Fijian Girls Dance Group who shared a love of their culture to help us learn more through dance. CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS It is fantastic to see our Creative and Performing Arts Department shining bright again in 2025! Students and staff excelled in delivering four outstanding performances of our 2025 school musical - Popstars! Over 80 students participated as cast and crew and wowed audiences from far and wide with their talents and teamwork. This year our students also participated in the Riverina Dance Festival showcasing the talents of our Representative Dance Ensemble and Representative Choir. We also look forward to participating in KROP, our local Eisteddfod and the School Spectacular later in the year. Congratulations to Sadie Tiffin who was invited to audition as a featured artist. What an awesome achievement! SPORT Students have been able to demonstrate their interest and abilities at numerous sporting events this year including our annual swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals. Many have progressed through the sporting achievement levels through individual and team sports earning selection in high level teams including Riverina, CHS, state levels and national representation with Ruby Miller being selected to represent Australia in the Deaf Olympics in Tokyo later this year. What an achievement! A special mention to our u15s Girls Soccer Team who, for the first time, won the Stephanie Scott Shield and our Open Boys Touch Team who again were crowned Riverina Champions and will progress to the next level which is very exciting news. Congratulations to Caydan Hillier was also awarded the Riverina Medal after multiple years of excellence in this sport.
