2024 SCHOOL YEAR AT LEETON PUBLIC SCHOOL School we are EXCURSIONS As we close the 2024 school year at Leeton Public School, we'd like to extend our thanks to you, our parent community, and students, for demonstrating so much of the spirit of our school's core values of being Respectful, Responsible and Resilient. We have strived together to get the best outcomes for our students and you have stayed by our side the entire time. We're especially proud of the way our community and students have embraced the many landmark occasions such as many sporting representation opportunities, Leeton Eisteddfod, School Spectacular, Dance Groups, Riverina Dance Festival, KROP, It was an exciting year for students to participate in school curriculum excursions across the school. This allowed all students to not only reinforce classroom learning, in some cases it also allowed them to enhance friendships and develop lifelong memories with friends. Kindergarten toured Altina Wildlife Park and were excited to see animals from around the world, while Years 1/2 visited the Narrandera Fisheries Centre and all K-2 students went to the Grifith Regional Theatre to watch a live theatre performance of 'The Gruffalo'. Stage 2 went Borambola Sport and Recreation Camp, participating in an outdoor education program that included archery, canoeing, BMX riding and the highly anticipated 'Mud Run'. Stage 3 travelled to Canberra for their traditional two-night overnight excursion, where they visited Old Parliament House, Parliament House, SPORT Debating, Assembly Showcases, Boys to the Bush, Murrumbidgee Academy of STEM Excellence (MASE) challenges, Presentation Day, Year 6 Graduation and the traditional Year 86 'Ringing of the Bell' on the last day. We also held a Year 6 Farewell Dinner at the Leeton Soldiers Club which was a great event and well supported. To our Year Six students, moving on to High School evokes different feelings and emotions for students: excitement in anticipation of beginning a new phase of life; sadness in leaving a place that has nurtured you for 7 years; trepidation in contemplating what lies ahead; Questacon, the Electoral Education Centre and the Australian War Memorial. All these excursions provided practical, hands-on experiences as part of student's studies of the History, Geography, Science and Technology curriculums. There were many sporting highlights in 2024, with students representing the school at school, LNPSSA and Riverina Regional level. Highlights included the LPS Rugby League and Cricket Teams success in their sport's state PSSA Knockouts, progressing deep into the knockout round competitions with great wins over much larger schools from larger centres. Students also participated at NSWPSSA State Carnivals in Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. In Term 4 students participated in the Little Champions Gymnastics Program and the school's annual Intensive Swimming program, building students skills in gymnastics and swimming. and joy and satisfaction for what has been achieved. Regardless of how they are feeling, they have all been influenced by their time at Leeton Public School and the person they are today is, to a significant degree, the result of their interactions with the students and staff of Leeton Public School and the experiences they have shared. We wish all our Year 6 students the very best with this next exciting phase of your life. Look back with fondness at the time you have spent here at Leeton Public School and know that you will always be welcome. But look out, and beyond, and do not limit yourself. MAJOR EVENTS SCHOOL In 2024 LPS again ran many of the normal major events held during the year. These included our annual Easter Hat and Book Week Parades, Mother's Day Lunch and NAIDOC Day celebrations. This year two new community events were added to the LPS calendar, a Father's Day Breakfast and a combined Grandparents Day Community Picnic and P&C Helicopter Ball Drop. The Father's Day Breakfast proved a 'hit', with the largest gathering of fathers for a number of years, and the most 'fl ouro' ever seen at LPS at one time. Lot of smiles and great feedback, this is sure to return in 2025. The biggest event of the school year was undoubtably our Grandparents Day Community Picnic and P & C Helicopter Ball Drop held early in Term 4, with students excited to watch a helicopter drop 300 numbered balls onto Leeton High School Ovals. This event raised over $7,000 for the Leeton public School P & C and was very successful. All funds raised are being allocated to the future purchase of a 25 seat bus for Leeton Public School. CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS The creative arts play an essential role in children's learning and development, enabling students to connect with the beauty around them, stimulating your brain and improving cognitive ability. The Creative and Performing Arts were again a highlight in the 2024 LPS calendar. Students performed in school, local, regional and state events including the Leeton Eisteddfod, Festival of Choral Music, School Spectacular, School Dance Groups, Riverina Dance Festival, KROP and regular Assembly Showcases throughout the year. FAREWELLS The end of 2024 LPS farewelled our amazing Mrs Suzanne Ryan as she commenced some very well-earned Long Service Leave, before transitioning to retirement in the future. Mrs Ryan has been teaching at Leeton Public School for over 30 years and during this time has led school initiatives in Science and the Creative Arts, with her amazing dedication and support for Choir participation in the Leeton Eisteddfod, Festival of Choral Music and School Spectacular, as well as Recorder and Instrumental Groups. But not all is lost, as Mrs Ryan still intends to help with Choir next year The highlight was the school's participation once again in the School Spectacular in Sydney, featuring over 5,500 talented student performers from NSW public schools, this iconic event is a spectacular celebration of music, dance, and artistry. CONGRATULATIONS and we will welcome her back in the future to formally recognise her future retirement. Good luck Mrs Ryan. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) In 2024 Leeton Public School further developed its relationship with the Murrumbidgee Academy of STEM Excellence (MASE). The STEM Industry School Partnerships (SISP) program has established Academies of STEM Excellence in nine regional locations around NSW, with MASE based at Griffith High School. Students participated in several STEM Challenges and online activities during the year. These included the F1 Cars and First LEGO League Robotics Challenges held at Griffith High School, as well as units work on Computational Thinking and Indigenous Seasons. One of our FIRST Lego League Challenge Teams won the Robotics Design Award at the regional competition and qualified for the finals that were held at Macquarie University at Sydney. An excited group of students and parents travelled to Sydney for the East Coast Finals of the FIRST Lego League Challenge and while not coming away with an award, gained an invaluable lesson in how these challenges run at a national level. The relationship with MASE is providing students with outstanding opportunities to develop their skills in collaboration, teamwork, creativity, technology and problem solving and the STEM calendar for 2024 is already brimming with opportunities.
