LEETON HIGH SCHOOL 2024 2024 HAS BEEN A SUCCESSFUL AND EXCITING YEAR AT LEETON HIGH SCHOOL WITH MANY WONDERFUL ACHIEVEMENTS FOR OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY. Student Leadership The senior leadership team have been an exceptional group of students and are to be congratulated on their efforts this year. School Captains, Chelsea Clark and Daniel Mohd Azry has been exceptional student leaders and inspiring role models for our school, ably supported by our Vice Captains Eloise Crelley and Victoria Glenn and Prefects Naz Dana Saifi, Libby Olrick, Adeliade Heins, Fatana Yousufi, Chase Lee, Ebony Dunbar and Isabelle Ross. This group certainly represented Leeton High School with distinction and commitment. Congratulations also to all Year 12 students who conquered their HSC Examinations and enjoyed their Graduation Dinner to conclude 13 years of schooling. These students have shown courage and commitment, and we are thankful for the wonderful memories made. Best wishes to this outstanding group of young people who are set for a stellar future. Year 12 also showed great commitment and generosity successfully fundraising more than $3000 for Bears of Hope to support grieving families. Our 2025 School Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects were elected during Term 3. Congratulations to Vasati Taavao and Amin Azizul, Jaxon Johnson and Iskander Mohd Azry Vice Captains and Ashlee Milvain and Ruby Miller as our Prefects. This group of young people are respectful, committed, proactive ambassadors, and we look forward to their ongoing contribution and positive impact on Leeton High School in 2025. The school's student leadership team was formed in Term 1 with the induction of our young leaders to the Student Representative Council. An SRC Induction Assembly and a morning tea were held with parents and carers in attendance to mark this very special occasion. The SRC have continued to be a driving force of ideas and action this year and have certainly been a visible presence within the school with their improvement projects, fundraising, and the participation of some SRC members in the Leeton Shire Youth Council on behalf of Leeton High School as the voice of our young people joining other local schools. Our SRC has also endeavoured to support many causes this year, including participating in the Fight MND with the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness around blood cancer. Thanks to the many brave teachers who got involved and had ice buckets poured on them to raise money for this great cause. School Events Year 6 into 7 Transition Program We welcomed Year 7 2024 students and families to our school for the LHS EXPO Evening early in the year to promote our school, facilities and opportunities. Thank you to all our teachers and student helpers who delivered a great array of activities and demonstrations to showcase life in high school. Special thanks to Elijah Ingram who delivered a traditional smoking ceremony to commence the event. We continued our Transition Program with Taster Lessons sessions and Orientation Day to round the year out. We appreciated getting the opportunity to get to know our newest students and to share our school in preparation for 2025. We can't wait to welcome our new families and to see this group next year! I'm sure our current Year 7 group can share some great stories and memories from their team-building camp at Laurel Hill this year. There were plenty of activities, games, and adventures over the three days. Loving the learning Our Year 7/8 Da Vinci Decathlon team had an outstanding experience in Wagga in Term 2. Leeton High School competed against 10 teams to achieve First Place in Mathematics and First Place in Engineering. Congratulations to the team on their amazing results against very strong competition from across the Riverina. The Year 9/10 Da Vinci Decathlon team competed in the Riverina final in Wagga as well. The team designed an innovative nesting box, created poetry and art about the metaverse, performed a skit where they were technology of theatre and demonstrated their knowledge of maps, vaccines, Da Vinci innovations and much more. Well done to the team for stepping out of their comfort zone and having a go at some very challenging activities. We are very proud of all our students who certainly stepped out of their comfort zones to challenge themselves against some of the brightest minds in the Riverina. Our Lego Robotics team competed in the Murrumbidgee Regional FIRST Lego League Challenge Final in Term 4. They had a fantastic day explaining their innovative idea for The year in review... exploring and cleaning up the ocean and their functional and creative robot design. They enjoyed learning from the other teams and demonstrating their building and coding expertise. Our team were awarded the Core Values Award for teamwork and gracious professionalism which earned them a place in the National Final at the end of November in Sydney. Congratulations to Mrs. Doig, Mr. Boardman and our amazing Lego Robotics Team. Senior students, Finley Sales and Daniel Mohd Azry, joined their peers from across the Riverina to celebrate the Bicentenary of the Legislative Council in Wagga. Finley represented Leeton High School in the Public Speaking competition component of the day and delivered an outstanding speech based on the theme 'Actions speak louder than words.' Daniel and Finley also participated in Youth Forum in the evening sharing their thoughts on the issues facing our young people in their different communities. NSV Year 10 students and their teacher mentors prepared themselves for moving into Year 11 in 2025. The Academic Mentor Program ran throughout Term 2 and part of Term 3. The program is designed to assist students in making the right choices for subject selections for Year 11. Throughout the program students explored strengths and interests and investigated which courses will provide the learning needed to help with desired career pathways with the assistance of their academic mento ensuring a more seamless transition to senior school. During 2024, the school continued our mission to improve student reading and numeracy outcomes through a targeted reading focus with testing showing significant improvement in reading scores for students in Year 7, 8 and 9. The Maths Pathway program from Years 7-10 has been adopted to support student's mathematical understanding at the 'point of need.' This initiative is an exciting, personalised learning program which has produced outstanding growth with some students mastering years of learning in 2024. Students follow their own learning pathway which identifies gaps to strengthen the knowledge base for greater success as students move through the mathematics curriculum. The program supports all learners to achieve, including accelerating students if they have mastered stage appropriate concepts with explicit teaching underpinning the understanding and application of numerical skills and concepts. Leeton High School's renowned Hands on Learning program provided opportunities for students who like to learn outside the classroom by exploring their more creative side. Our Hands on Learning group built their skills and knowledge by tackling diverse projects around our school. Students enjoyed sharing our facilities with Gralee and made some great projects and learnt some new skills. This group will also assist with the building of props for our 2025 school musical - Popstars! Wednesday Girls' group and Yindyamarra Girls' group have provided links for students to encourage improved attendance, positive relationships, stronger self-esteem and to foster a greater connection to culture. These programs run every term. Leeton High School joined with Boys to the Bush to support our young men to be their best. Each term a new group of students work with the Boys to the Bush team and students are well supported by local community businesses and industry to deliver engaging programs to our boys. Careers Our Careers Expo was again in full swing in 2024 with 1000 students from across the Riverina visiting to learn more about future career pathway options. Our school hosted exhibitors from across NSW including universities and TAFE NSW, local business and industry and the armed forces. It was fantastic to be able to provide this valuable service to support other schools and their students with their post school decision making. Innovative programs further supported our students who are needing more information about what's out there after school. The Future Moves program certainly hit the mark in providing Year 9 and 10 students with some useful information and smart advice in preparation for the next steps after school. The WIN and YES programs also provided some unique experiences for those students interested in electrotechnology and construction with hands-on experiences. A huge thank you to local businesses for hosting Year 10 for work experience and for providing guidance and care to our students and to all organisations and businesses involved in supporting our students to enter the workforce. A huge congratulations to Year 12 student, Libby Olrick, who was named the School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year at the NSW Training Awards for the Riverina Region. Libby has been working at Leeton District Hospital one day a week for the past 2 years as part of her SBAT working towards achieving a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. Libby's dedication to her patients and her commitment to her studies has been exceptional from the beginning. Culture and community Our Pacifica dance groups were also a welcome addition to the sharing of culture through dance at Leeton High School. Students and staff learnt many memorable songs and dances from our Fijian, Samoan, Maori and Solomon Islander students and we thank our students for sharing this with us. The Creative Arts shone this year at Leeton High School this year. We embraced every opportunity to showcase our students' skills and talents and participated in events such as KROP, Schools Spectacular, our local Eisteddfod, Leeton Idol and most recently MADD Night. Congratulations to all our students, including performers, backstage, lighting and front of house crews, for sharing their immense talents and demonstrating enormous commitment and to our teachers for the considerable amount of time they spend preparing and practicing for these mammoth events. Our Representative Dance Ensemble represented our school at the Riverinal Dance Festival in Albury. The girls performed high quality pieces titled 'Better together' which were choreographed by Tori Glenn. A huge thank you to Tori and Ebony Dunbar, both in Year 12, for their contribution to the creative and performing arts over the years. These two dedicated and talented students will surely be missed in the coming years, and we thank them for their leadership and mentoring of our younger dance students. We look forward to sharing in their final year of dance at Leeton High School. Backing up after three successful shows at KROP in Griffith in recent weeks, our Choir showcased their talents again competing in the 2024 Leeton Eisteddfod. Our singers pushed to produce six wonderful performances at the Leeton Soldiers Club and achieved two First Places, three Second Places and two Highly Commended acknowledgements. Congratulations to all students involved on another great result. Student choreographers Lily and Brooke produced two great pieces for their student ensembles. The girls were subsequently awarded a First Place and a Highly Commended for their efforts. It was wonderful to see such strong student leadership and creativity within our dance groups. Congratulations to our Representative Dance Ensemble and our Junior Dance Ensemble who were awarded First Place and Highly Commended in the Leeton Eisteddfod Society Inc Dance Group - Secondary School section of the Eisteddfod.
