Helen Dalton MP INDEPENDENT MEMBER FOR MURRAY AS YOUR LOCAL MP here is my monthly news update. It was my great privilege to be sworn into the 58th Parliament of New South Wales in May. In the first sitting weeks of this term I immediately jumped straight into our issues. I stood up to defend NSW irrigators from illegal water buy backs for the 450GL environmental flows to S.A. And I called on the NSW Government to declare a moratorium on them in New South Wales. To prevent this wrecking ball process which will decimate irrigation communities, I introduced my Transfer of Water Bill 2023. This will prevent the transfer of NSW water to the Federal Government. This Bill gives NSW the same protections that the Victorian Government has given to the Victorian people. Their government has already blocked the purchase of Victorian water by the Federal Government, and NSW rural communities need that same protection. In Parliament I also participated in the debate on the Electoral Funding Amendment (Registered Clubs) I argued that the cashless gaming card must be introduced immediately, so that NSW can begin to tackle this state's shocking levels of poker machine addiction. Poker machines are designed to promote addiction and we need to focus on the machines, not just the signs that tell you about the machines. Minister for Health, Ryan Park, returned to the electorate and we visited Finley and Deniliquin Hospitals to see the hospital upgrades and meet with staff. The $4.6 milion investment by the NSW and Australian Government has provided much needed improvements to the Hospital. The improvements are fantastic. However, the staffing of rural and remote hospitals and doctor shortages remain important issues, that I am determined to resolve with the Government. MEN Minister for Education Prue Car also made a visit to the electorate in June to assess restructuring the model for secondary education in Griffith. Following the trip, Minister Car gave the assurance that no current staff member would lose their job and that NESA will provide two individual school numbers for the 2023 Year 11 cohort in time for the 2024 HSC. The Minister said that a review will be undertaken of the Teacher Incentive Scheme and the specific rules that currently penalise teachers who live and teach in Griffith. Working with Jenny Aitchison, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, the project to restore access on the Cobb Highway between Booligaland Ivanhoe got underway. Flooding forced the road's closure last year. And as if my workload wasn't heavy enough, I was appointed as Chair of the NSW Committee for Children and Young People. It has a wide scope addressing issues such as bullying and cyber bullying, child protection, youth justice, child disability advocacy, indigenous youth support and connection to culture and children's health.
